On May 7, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that detectives investigating the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were had uncovered links between his close associates and the killers. Authorities have intensified their probe into the shocking assassination.
Gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed Were on April 30 during Nairobi’s evening traffic. The well-coordinated attack has heightened concerns over political violence and security lapses.
Murkomen revealed that some of Were’s allies collaborated with the killers. “We have made significant progress in arresting the perpetrators and their accomplices. It is shocking to discover that individuals who should have protected him played a role in his murder,” Murkomen told journalists in Meru.
The CS reassured the public that law enforcement would ensure all suspects face justice. “The suspects will be held accountable, serving as a warning to anyone who thinks they can evade the law,” he added.
Authorities have already detained several individuals connected to the murder. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that officers arrested Edwin Oduor Odhiambo (alias Abdul Rashid) and Dennis Sewe Munyasi. Investigators recovered firearms and other critical evidence, including a bag and footwear matching crime scene descriptions.
On Monday, prosecutors formally charged four suspects. Meanwhile, investigators continued tracking additional individuals, including a police officer suspected of playing a central role in the killing. Authorities suspect an organized criminal network, backed by significant financial resources, orchestrated the assassination.
