IPOA targets call records in probe into blogger Albert Ojwang’s death

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has intensified efforts to investigate the death of blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang. Seeking court orders, IPOA demands access to call records linked to 17 mobile phone numbers suspected to be involved in the case.

IPOA has filed an application in court, urging Safaricom Kenya Limited to release crucial subscriber details, call logs, and travel patterns. The authority believes that analyzing this data will help identify individuals connected to Ojwang’s death and track their communication and movements between June 4 and June 8, 2025.

IPOA investigator Abdirahman Jibril presented the petition, requesting documents such as account opening details, registered subscriber information, and call records. Additionally, IPOA asks Safaricom to appoint an authorized officer to issue a Certificate of Production of Electronic Evidence, ensuring the validity of any electronic records submitted in court.

Ojwang’s death has triggered public outrage, as many question the circumstances surrounding his demise while in police custody. IPOA is investigating whether his death resulted from custodial torture, a serious offense under Section 203 of the Penal Code.

The court acknowledges that Safaricom holds critical data necessary for a fair and impartial investigation. IPOA maintains that acquiring this information is essential in determining whether legal action should follow.

Meanwhile, the investigation has led to the arrest of Police Constable James Mukhwana, suspected of involvement in Ojwang’s death. IPOA insists that Mukhwana should remain in custody until June 20, 2025, to prevent witness interference.

IPOA’s request for call records demonstrates a determined effort to uncover the truth and ensure justice.
