JKUAT shuts down indefinitely, orders students to vacate within 24 hours amid prolonged lecturers’ strike disruption

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has been closed indefinitely following a protracted lecturers’ strike that has paralyzed learning and administrative operations across public universities.

In a notice issued on Saturday, November 1, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Robert Kinyua directed all students residing within the Juja-based main campus to vacate the institution by Sunday, November 2, at 4 p.m.

The decision follows a special Senate meeting held on Thursday, October 30, which resolved to suspend all academic programs with immediate effect due to the industrial action by members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU).

“Due to the ongoing industrial action which has adversely affected the normal operations of academic programs, the University temporarily suspends academic activities with immediate effect until further notice,” read part of the statement.

However, the notice exempted several groups from vacating, including students on clinical rotations, JKUAT College students, Mombasa Campus students, Nakuru Campus students, e-learning students, and postgraduate researchers.

The university management expressed regret over the disruption, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the indefinite closure, but appreciated students for their patience and cooperation.

“The University management regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding and cooperation during this period,” stated Prof. Kinyua.

JKUAT assured students that communication on the resumption of academic activities will be shared through official university channels once the situation normalizes.

The ongoing strike, now in its seventh week, has significantly disrupted academic operations across multiple public universities, leaving thousands of students uncertain about the continuation of their studies.
