Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi has come forward with alarming claims, stating that his life is in danger due to his opposition to the Finance Bill 2024. The lawmaker revealed that he has been receiving threats daily since he voted against the bill, which was heavily promoted by President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Koimburi’s troubles began shortly after his vote against the Finance Bill 2024, a piece of legislation that he believes contained oppressive measures not in the best interests of Kenyans. Despite pressure from the administration, Koimburi stood firm, arguing that the bill would harm those already struggling to survive.
“I began receiving threats from leaders, especially those we’ve been elected together in Kiambu, since I voted no to the finance bill. I shall not be intimidated,” Koimburi declared at Nyacaba Secondary School, where he was commissioning newly renovated classrooms and lavatories.
The MP further revealed that his political stand had led to him being sidelined in the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. He vowed to continue speaking the truth and exposing corrupt dealings within the government, despite the threats.
The MP plans to file a formal report with the police, identifying individuals who have been trailing and threatening him. Koimburi also accused National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro of misleading President Ruto, leading to the bill’s rejection by the public. He claimed that these leaders knew the bill was unpopular but still pressured the President into pushing it forward.
He urged President Ruto to extend his leadership shake-up beyond the cabinet to include parliamentary leaders who have failed him.
The Juja MP, along with Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, were the only legislators from Kiambu who voted against the Finance Bill 2024. Koimburi claimed that his stance had led to his isolation within the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
This comes after, he alleged that MPs were offered Ksh2 million each to vote in favor of the bill. He maintained that he refused the bribe, prioritizing his responsibility to his constituents over personal gain.
