EACC officials arrested Kajiado West MP George Risa Sunkuyia for allegedly forging his KCSE certificate. They picked him up from his Nairobi home and took him to Integrity Centre for processing. The commission plans to charge him with forgery and providing false information.
Authorities accuse Sunkuyia of falsifying his KCSE results, claiming a C+ grade he never earned. Investigators also found discrepancies in his diploma credentials from Mount Kenya University. As a result, the EACC launched a full inquiry to verify his educational qualifications.
EACC officials stated, “The suspect is undergoing processing and will face charges related to the alleged forgery in court.”
Sunkuyia, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MP, first won his seat in 2017 and secured re-election in 2022. His political career dates back to his time as a County Councillor (2002–2013) and later as Keekonyokie Ward MCA (2013–2017).
Sunkuyia’s arrest adds to a series of forgery scandals involving elected leaders. In February, authorities arraigned Juja MP George Koimburi in Kiambu Court for forging KCSE certificates and two JKUAT degrees. He denied the allegations and secured release on a Ksh. 200,000 cash bail.
Conversely, Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi faced similar allegations but won acquittal in June 2024. The court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove their case and criticized investigative procedures.
Kenya has seen a surge in academic fraud among public officials. At the 2025 Ethics and Integrity Conference, leaders warned that the issue is growing, especially within state agencies. Since 2022, EACC has investigated 549 cases, forwarding 85 for prosecution. Some suspects faced convictions, while others secured acquittal.
