Kalonzo declares 2027 presidential bid

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, setting the stage for renewed political activity within the opposition as coalition talks gather momentum.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, Kalonzo confirmed that he had already received the mandate to seek the country’s top seat and had since been preparing himself for the challenge ahead. He said the decision was made in October last year, bringing clarity to earlier speculation about his political ambitions.

Kalonzo expressed confidence that he has the support needed to mount a strong campaign, noting that many Kenyans are seeking change ahead of the next general election.

While he did not specify the political party under which he will contest, the Wiper Patriotic Front leader indicated that efforts are underway to build a broad-based coalition capable of challenging President William Ruto.

He revealed that discussions within the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition are ongoing, with a focus on strengthening unity and consolidating support among like-minded leaders. Kalonzo noted that he had taken over leadership roles within the coalition following internal changes, and emphasised the need to streamline its structures moving forward.

The former Vice President also raised concerns over delays in formalising leadership changes within the coalition, suggesting that the process had faced obstacles despite its importance in shaping parliamentary leadership positions.

He maintained that Azimio remains a significant political force, particularly in the National Assembly, and urged members to rally behind a common agenda as preparations for 2027 continue.

Kalonzo reiterated that former Cabinet Secretary Martha Karua remains recognised within his camp as the coalition’s secretary general, dismissing alternative claims and calling for clarity within the coalition’s ranks.

He further urged leaders to utilise the existing coalition framework as a vehicle for the next election, even as discussions continue on possible rebranding and restructuring.

On his presidential ambitions, Kalonzo said he is open to being considered a consensus candidate if endorsed by coalition partners. He noted that efforts are ongoing to engage allies and build support around a unified ticket.

He expressed optimism that a united opposition could mount a formidable challenge in 2027, potentially reshaping the country’s political landscape.

At the same time, Kalonzo downplayed confrontational politics, saying his approach will focus on strategy, unity, and engaging Kenyans on key issues affecting their lives.

As early political alignments begin to take shape, his declaration marks a significant moment in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, with coalition dynamics expected to play a decisive role.
