KANU party leader Gideon Moi has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election, just days after announcing his intention to contest the seat.
The move came shortly after Moi and senior KANU officials held a closed-door meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi a discussion reportedly centered on the Baringo race and broader political cooperation.
KANU Secretary General George Wainaina confirmed on Thursday, October 9, that the party would not be fielding a candidate in the November 27 by-election, effectively giving the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) a smooth run in the polls.
Supporters in Kabarnet were left disappointed after Moi failed to present his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) within the allocated 11:00am–2:00pm window. Many had gathered at the Baringo Airstrip expecting his arrival, sparking protests when he did not show up.
The decision marks a significant shift for the former senator, who had previously positioned himself as an independent political voice critical of Ruto’s administration. His withdrawal is being viewed as a possible sign of reconciliation or strategic realignment within Rift Valley politics.
Moi, who lost the Baringo Senate seat in the 2022 General Election to the late William Cheptumo of UDA, had sought a political comeback through the by-election. The ruling UDA party has since endorsed Vincent Chemitei as its candidate.
Political observers believe Moi’s latest move could reshape Baringo’s political landscape and ease tensions between his KANU faction and the ruling coalition.
