KCSE rehearsals to proceed on October 17 despite public holiday for Raila Odinga, Education Ministry confirms

The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) rehearsal exercise will proceed as planned on Friday, October 17, 2025.

This is despite the government’s declaration of the day as a national public holiday in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

A senior ministry official said the rehearsal could not be rescheduled, noting that it is a crucial part of the national examination calendar and any changes would disrupt the KCSE timetable.

“Normally, rehearsals are not interfered with, and officers on the ground have been duly briefed to ensure everything runs smoothly,” the official stated.

The rehearsals will prepare candidates for the 2025 KCSE examination, which officially begins on Tuesday, October 21. The theory papers are expected to start on November 3 and conclude on November 21, running for a period of 18 days.

The announcement comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen gazetted Friday as a public holiday to mark a day of national mourning following Raila Odinga’s passing in India on Wednesday morning.

The confirmation by the Ministry of Education ends days of speculation from parents, teachers, and candidates who were uncertain whether the rehearsal would go on.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for Grade 6 learners will run from October 27 to October 30, alongside the Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) for special needs learners.

Under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and the Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment (KPLEA) will also be conducted between October 27 and November 6.

Schools are expected to close for the December holidays on October 24, with learners set to resume for the 2026 academic year on January 5.
