The Ministry of Defence, in partnership with the Kiambu County Government, has begun a major upgrade of Thika Stadium as part of a national push to modernize key sports facilities. The project follows a directive by President William Ruto to have the Kenya Defence Forces take a leading role in fast-tracking stadium construction across the country.
Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru led an inspection tour on Wednesday to assess the stadium’s condition and identify areas requiring urgent redevelopment. The planned works will focus on reinforcing structural elements, modernising athlete amenities, and improving the overall spectator experience.
Once complete, Thika Stadium is expected to become a modern centre for sports development, talent growth, and community activities across Kiambu and neighbouring regions. Mariru said the upgrade underscores the government’s commitment to quality, accessible sports infrastructure that empowers youth and promotes active lifestyles.
The inspection team included Brigadier Titus Sokobe and Kiambu CEC for Youth, Sports, and Communication Ali Osman Korar, who both emphasised the importance of close cooperation between the national and county governments.
With Kenya preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, KDF has been overseeing the development of several facilities, including Ulinzi Sports Complex, Nyayo Stadium, Kasarani, and Police SACCO Stadium. Thika Stadium now joins the list, with more projects expected from 2026, including upgrades in Eldoret, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Siaya.
