Thika Road has fully reopened to traffic after the successful installation of a new footbridge at Juja Highpoint (Centurion).
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced this milestone on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, following a six-day partial closure of the highway to facilitate the construction of the pedestrian structure safely.
The partial closure, which took place nightly from 11 pm to 6 am, began on December 12, 2024, and concluded on December 17, 2024. KeNHA expressed gratitude to motorists and local residents for their cooperation during this period. “The Authority thanks you for your cooperation and patience. At KeNHA, your safety is our utmost priority,” read the statement.
In a statement, KeNHA informed the public that Thika Superhighway at Juja Highpoint (Centurion) is now open for traffic. This follows the completion of the footbridge construction at this section, allowing road users to access it safely.
The new footbridge aims to enhance pedestrian safety in the Juja Highpoint area, a known accident hotspot due to heavy traffic and frequent jaywalking. Before its installation, pedestrians often risked crossing the busy dual carriageway, endangering their lives and causing traffic disruptions.
During the construction period, Nairobi-bound vehicles were diverted via a detour behind Lexo Petrol Station, while Thika-bound vehicles were rerouted behind Centurion Hotel before rejoining the highway.
Though the diversions caused temporary delays, they were necessary to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction crews. KeNHA emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic management plans during such projects to minimize disruptions and prevent accidents.
“The Authority thanks you for your cooperation and patience. At KeNHA, your safety is our utmost priority,” KeNHA reiterated in their appreciation to motorists.
The completion of the Juja Highpoint footbridge is part of KeNHA’s broader efforts to improve road safety across the country, particularly along high-traffic corridors like Thika Road.
