Kenya Airways has increased the number of flights to Kisumu over the weekend to cater for the surge in passengers travelling to attend the State Burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 17, the national carrier announced additional flights and aircraft upgrades on the Nairobi–Kisumu route to accommodate the growing demand from mourners heading to the lakeside city.
“We’ve increased our flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand,” Kenya Airways stated.
Odinga, who passed away on October 15, will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his family home in Kang’o, Jaramogi, Bondo. His body will lie in state at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo, Kisumu, on Saturday, October 18, for public viewing before being transported to his Opoda Farm home for a night vigil.
According to the airline, two additional flights KQ656 departing Nairobi at 1:30 pm and KQ658 at 7:00 pm — were introduced on Friday. On Saturday, KQ650 (6:50 am) and KQ654 (8:05 am) will operate with upgraded Boeing 737 aircraft to accommodate more passengers.
Kenya Airways further announced that flights KQ654 (8:05 am) and KQ671 (7:00 pm) on Sunday, as well as KQ654 and KQ670 on Monday, October 20, will also be upgraded to Boeing 737s to enhance capacity.
“We remain committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests,” the airline added.
The adjustments come amid reports that most flights to Kisumu had been fully booked by Friday morning, as thousands of mourners from across the country and beyond travel to bid farewell to the veteran opposition leader and democracy icon.
Raila’s funeral events, which began with a national memorial service at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, have drawn local and international attention, with dignitaries from across Africa expected to attend the burial in Bondo.
Kenya Airways, which operates multiple daily flights between Nairobi and Kisumu, said the move underscores its commitment to supporting national events and ensuring Kenyans can travel conveniently during this historic moment.
