Kenya Railways warns Kenyans against Facebook fraudsters, urges travellers to buy SGR tickets only via official platforms

Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has cautioned the public against purchasing Madaraka Express tickets from fake Facebook groups and pages run by fraudsters posing as official agents.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the corporation flagged four Facebook groups each with thousands of followers being used to con unsuspecting travellers.

“Please note that these pages are managed by fraudsters who are out to con unsuspecting members of the public. Whenever you want to speak to us, please reach us through our official contacts,” Kenya Railways warned.

The fraudulent pages reportedly post fake phone numbers claiming to be customer care lines, luring Kenyans seeking assistance with SGR bookings.

Kenya Railways has urged passengers to confirm official communication channels only through the verified Kenya Railways website and social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, or via the official Metickets platform.

Travellers are reminded that tickets for the Nairobi–Mombasa Madaraka Express can only be purchased through three verified channels:

  • Online at metickets.krc.co.ke
  • Via USSD code *639#
  • Physically at Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and book exclusively through our official platforms. Protect yourself from fraud!” the corporation emphasized.

The Madaraka Express runs between Nairobi and Mombasa with stops at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi, and Mariakani, serving thousands of travellers daily.
