Kenya reaffirms strong commitment to South Sudan peace efforts – General Kahariri

Kenya has reiterated its unwavering commitment to peace in South Sudan, with Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri affirming that the country will continue supporting the ongoing stabilization efforts in the region.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 5, during a high-level meeting at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, General Kahariri met with Major General Teshome Anagaw, Chairperson of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), to discuss the progress of peace implementation.

General Kahariri emphasized that Kenya’s support for South Sudan is not just a strategic interest, but a moral duty.

“Peace in South Sudan is not just a regional imperative. It is a moral responsibility for the security and prosperity of our region,” he said.

“CTSAMVM’s role is critical in ensuring that all parties uphold the ceasefire and move towards lasting peace. Kenya remains committed to this mission and to the broader commitment to IGAD and regional peace efforts.”

He confirmed that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are prepared to offer full support, including the deployment of additional personnel, military expertise, and logistical supplies needed on the ground.

Kenya continues to play a central role as one of the main guarantors of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS). This includes actively promoting peace, political dialogue, and cooperation through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC).

During the meeting, Major General Anagaw gave a comprehensive update on the progress made and the challenges facing the ceasefire monitoring mechanism. He praised Kenya’s consistent role in helping maintain peace in the fragile nation.

This renewed support comes months after President William Ruto, as the EAC chairperson, held phone conversations with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice-President Riek Machar on March 6, urging them to engage in dialogue over escalating tensions.

“This morning, I spoke with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice-President Riek Machar about the escalating security situation,” Ruto stated.

“I implored both leaders to engage in dialogue towards fostering peace in the country, even as the region works towards stabilization under IGAD’s Strategic Framework.”

Kenya’s active involvement underscores its firm position on regional peace and its longstanding role in shaping the future of South Sudan through diplomacy, dialogue, and boots-on-the-ground peacekeeping.
