Kenya has joined other African states in adopting the COMESA Electronic Certificate of Origin (e-CO), a move expected to speed up trade and ease cargo clearance across borders.
The system allows exporters to apply for, issue, and verify certificates online, replacing the long and costly manual process. Certificates of Origin confirm where goods are produced, grown, or manufactured, and are critical in ensuring that products from COMESA member states receive preferential treatment within the Free Trade Area.
Speaking during the launch, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Regina Akoth Ombam, said the adoption marks Kenya’s commitment to digital transformation and regional integration. Her remarks were delivered on her behalf by Timothy Were, Director of ICT at the Ministry of Trade.
“This launch is a signal that Kenya is ready to drive forward digital transformation, regional integration, and continental unity,” Ombam stated.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will manage exporter registration, certificate issuance, and verification, while the COMESA Secretariat will provide technical support.
The e-CO was first introduced in 2024 with Eswatini, Malawi, and Zambia as pilot countries. With Kenya and Zimbabwe now onboard, the number of participating states has risen to 21.
The digital system promises real-time tracking, improved transparency, and enhanced security through digital signatures and secure data exchange. It is also expected to shorten processing times, lower costs, and ease the movement of goods across borders, boosting regional trade.
The initiative is being implemented under the COMESA Trade Facilitation Programme, supported by the 11th European Development Fund.
