Kenya secures Ksh407 million grant to fund feasibility study for Mau Summit–Malaba road upgrade project

Kenya has secured a Ksh407 million grant from the Multilateral Cooperation Centre for Development Finance (MCDF) to fund a feasibility study for the upgrade of the 243-kilometre Mau Summit–Malaba Road.

The funding, approved during the MCDF Governing Committee meeting in Beijing on November 25, 2025, will support preparations for a public-private partnership (PPP) aimed at improving one of East Africa’s busiest trade corridors.

The road links Mau Summit in Nakuru County to the Malaba border with Uganda, serving as a vital gateway for trade with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC, and northern Tanzania. The corridor handles about 30 million tonnes of cargo annually, according to the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority.

The feasibility study, to be conducted by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), will assess technical, environmental, social, and financial aspects of the project. It will also explore potential tolling structures, dual carriage expansions, climate resilience measures, and accident reduction strategies along accident-prone stretches.

Officials say the upgrade will reduce transport costs, ease congestion, and cut travel time for thousands of trucks daily, boosting regional trade and enhancing mobility along the Northern Corridor.
