Kenya to host 2025 world under-21 Taekwondo Championships, drawing global athletes and spotlighting nation’s sporting prowess

Kenya is set to take centre stage on the global sports calendar as it prepares to host the World Under-21 Taekwondo Championships, one of the most prestigious international sporting events ever held in the country.

According to Taekwondo Federation of Kenya President Major Suleiman Sumba, the event will bring together the highest number of participating nations in the country’s sporting history, with over 500 million viewers expected to follow the matches worldwide.

“This is not just another tournament,” said Maj. Sumba. “It will create global awareness, stimulate tourism, boost economic activity, and enhance Kenya’s international image.”

He praised the government for offering crucial support to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and ensuring preparations were on track despite limited resources. “We have come this far with the state’s support as a major sponsor,” he said.

Beyond sport, the championship is also being hailed as a platform for youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and cross-cultural exchange.

“These young men and women under 21 are the future leaders of their nations. Their time in Kenya will leave a lasting impression,” Maj. Sumba noted.

Kenya’s national taekwondo team has been undergoing rigorous training following a stellar performance at the Korean Ambassador’s Cup in Uganda, where both the men’s and women’s teams emerged overall winners bagging 11 gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Coach Joseph Mwanda said the Ugandan victory boosted the team’s morale. “We played tough opponents and triumphed. That gave us confidence as we prepare to host the world,” he stated.

The team is expected to proceed to Ivory Coast for a two-week high-intensity training camp before returning home for the championship.

However, organisers admitted facing logistical challenges, including delays in delivery of international-standard equipment, but assured that both the government and LOC were working to resolve the issue.

Captain Dock Stacy of the women’s team said competing on home soil was an honour and a motivation. “Wearing Kenya’s colours before our people is special. The pressure is there, but we’re ready to make our country proud,” she said.

The event is expected to attract hundreds of international participants and fans, positioning Kenya as a leading destination for global sporting events and youth-driven cultural exchange.
