Kenya has been urged to expand digital partnerships and strengthen agricultural policies to accelerate transformation and boost food security across the country.
The appeal came during the AgriFin Learning Event in Nairobi, where Mercy Corps’ AgriFin programme marked 10 years of supporting digital innovation and financial inclusion for smallholder farmers across Africa and Asia.
Mercy Corps Vice President Melaku Yirgu praised Kenya’s leadership in agricultural innovation, saying digital technology continues to empower millions of farmers across the continent.
“Over the past decade, AgriFin has worked with more than 150 partners, reaching over 18 million smallholder farmers across Africa and Asia,” Yirgu noted. “The program has shown that agriculture succeeds when partnerships adapt to local realities and community needs.”
Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Kenya CEO Tamara Cook commended Kenya’s strides in promoting tech-enabled agriculture but cautioned that challenges such as climate shocks, high operational costs, and limited infrastructure continue to affect productivity.
“AgriFin’s success shows that collaboration between agriculture, finance, and technology is essential. To feed our people and grow resilient food systems, we must align these sectors more closely,” Cook said.
She urged the government to design smarter agricultural policies and use public and donor funds strategically to attract private investment. “Kenya is rich in resources; it is unacceptable that food insecurity persists. We must deploy our resources to build sustainable food systems that benefit every household,” she added.
AgriFin Program Director Sieka Gatabaki highlighted Kenya’s growing digital readiness, crediting strong partnerships between the public and private sectors for fostering agricultural innovation. “Kenya has shown remarkable leadership in promoting technology-driven farming systems. What’s needed now is a farmer-first approach that ensures innovations meet real needs,” he said.
He also pointed out the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving agricultural decision-making, cutting operational costs, and deepening financial inclusion.
Briter Intelligence Director Dario Giuliani emphasized that private investment alone cannot solve Africa’s food challenges. “We must adopt a systems approach where policy, research, and innovation work together. Growth in agri-tech isn’t only about big valuations it’s about creating sustainable impact,” he said.
Participants lauded Kenya’s leadership in digital transformation, positioning it as a continental model for tech-driven agricultural development. As AgriFin enters its second decade, stakeholders pledged to deepen collaboration with the government, scale up farmer innovations, and strengthen resilience in the face of climate and market disruptions.
