Kenya’s CDF Charles Kahariri meets US AFRICOM commander Langley to strengthen regional security partnerships

Kenya’s Chief of the Defense Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, held high-level bilateral talks with United States Africa Command (US AFRICOM) Commander General Michael Langley on Thursday, August 14, at the AFRICOM Headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

The meeting highlighted the enduring strategic partnership between Kenya and the US in promoting peace and stability across Africa. General Langley praised the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for their significant contributions, particularly in peace support operations in Somalia, and emphasized Kenya’s pivotal role in regional security, including maritime domains in the Horn of Africa.

General Kahariri expressed gratitude for the US’s ongoing support but raised concerns over the recent drawdown of troops under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), warning it could reverse years of progress. He stressed that temporary bilateral arrangements with Somalia, while helpful, are unsustainable without stronger international backing.

Both military leaders agreed on renewing and expanding security partnerships across Africa and globally. They also committed to fostering innovation to counter emerging threats such as cyberattacks, environmental challenges, and disruptive tactics. Additionally, they signed an agreement aimed at professionalizing African military forces through enhanced multiagency operations and improved civil-military relations.
