Kenya’s maternal health crisis: blood shortages blamed for rising postpartum deaths

Kenya is facing a worsening maternal health crisis, with experts warning that preventable blood shortages are driving a surge in postpartum deaths.

Health data shows that three out of every ten women who suffer postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) die daily due to lack of blood at the critical moment of need. PPH is a life-threatening condition where women experience excessive bleeding after childbirth.

According to specialists, timely blood transfusions are essential to save mothers’ lives, prevent organ failure, and improve newborn survival. However, many health facilities lack adequate blood banks, leaving women and infants exposed to preventable tragedy.

Speaking during the launch of the Run for Her campaign in Nairobi, Dr. Kireki Omanwa, President of the Gynecologic and Obstetrical Society, said the crisis highlights a failure in Kenya’s healthcare system.

“When a mother dies during childbirth, her baby’s chance of survival drastically diminishes. In Kenya alone, we lose over 5,000 women and newborns each year, many due to the lack of safe and timely blood transfusions. It is a heartbreaking reality that, 63 years after independence, Kenya still grapples with this preventable failure,” Dr. Omanwa said.

Professor Moses Obimbo added that Africa accounts for 30 percent of global births but carries more than half of the world’s maternal health challenges. In 2023, Africa recorded 182,000 maternal deaths, with over 100,000 linked to PPH.

In Kenya, the situation is worsened by teenage pregnancies, poor emergency preparedness, and weak health infrastructure. Last year alone, 240,000 teenage pregnancies were reported, exposing young mothers to severe complications.

“Postpartum hemorrhage alone causes 35 to 60 percent of maternal deaths. It is 1.6 times deadlier than road traffic accidents. Yet two to three women die every day in Kenya, not because the bleeding couldn’t be managed, but because we didn’t have blood,” said Prof. Obimbo.

The Kenya Red Cross has urged increased community blood donations to strengthen maternal health interventions. Public Health Manager Wilson Owino Opondo stressed that timely access to blood remains the single most effective way to save mothers during childbirth emergencies.
