Kericho exhumation reveals 33 bodies, mostly minors

An exhumation exercise in Kericho has uncovered 33 bodies at a local cemetery, raising alarm after initial reports had indicated the presence of only 14 graves.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), working alongside government pathologists, made the discovery during an ongoing probe into suspected irregular burials at the site. The findings have shocked residents and heightened concern over the circumstances surrounding the interments.

According to preliminary reports, 25 of the recovered bodies are believed to be minors, with many suspected to be teenagers and young children. The remaining eight bodies are adults. Authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive statement detailing the identities of the deceased or the causes of death.

The exhumation process, which began earlier this week, is being supervised by senior homicide officers and forensic experts. Pathologists on site are conducting examinations to establish possible causes of death and determine whether any foul play may have been involved.

The case first came to light after two grave diggers working at the cemetery reported suspicious activity. The workers told police that a group of unidentified individuals had approached the cemetery caretaker earlier in the week and held what appeared to be unusual discussions before leaving the premises.

Following the report, officers launched investigations and later confirmed the presence of multiple graves at the site. Initial findings suggest that some of the bodies may have been transferred from Nyamira District Referral Hospital after remaining unclaimed for an extended period.

While early indications have not conclusively pointed to criminal activity, investigators are exploring all possible angles. Two individuals, including a public health officer from the Nyamira facility and the cemetery caretaker, have since been detained to assist with investigations. They are expected to remain in custody for 30 days as inquiries continue.

The discovery has triggered concern among residents, many of whom are demanding clarity from authorities on how such a large number of bodies ended up at the cemetery without public knowledge.

Police say the exhumation exercise is ongoing, with more information expected once forensic analysis is completed. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring that all findings will be made public in due course.
