Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has called for calm and unity in the county after narrowly surviving a second impeachment attempt.
Speaking on Friday, August 29, shortly after the Senate cleared him, the governor strongly criticized Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai and a group of defiant MCAs, accusing them of derailing development through endless political battles.
“Enough is enough. The Speaker of Kericho County has taken us round in circles. We cannot continue like this,” Mutai said in an emotional address.
He accused Speaker Mutai of plotting to punish pro-governor MCAs by stripping them of committee positions, warning that such moves would not go unchallenged.
“I hear they are threatening to remove some MCAs who support me. Maybe last time after the impeachment I kept quiet, but this time I am watching,” he warned.
The governor claimed the ongoing wrangles are politically motivated by leaders afraid of facing him in the 2027 polls.
“What we have in Kericho County is a power struggle driven by politicians who shudder at the thought of meeting me on the ballot. These games are not for the people of Kericho, but for their own selfish interests,” he added.
Even as he criticized his rivals, Mutai extended an olive branch, urging leaders to put aside personal differences and prioritize the county’s progress.
“I am willing to work with all of them, but respect must be upheld. Justice must come with clean hands,” he said.
On Friday, the Senate dismissed the impeachment motion against him, ruling that the Kericho County Assembly had failed to meet the constitutional threshold to remove a sitting governor.
A total of 26 senators voted against the motion, 16 supported it, while one abstained. Mutai thanked his family, the Senate, his legal team, and God for the acquittal.
