KFS deploys drone patrols in Karura forest following security concerns and python sighting reports

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has rolled out drone patrols in Karura Forest to enhance security, just days after a python was reportedly spotted in the popular Nairobi green space.

In a statement, the agency said the drones operated by its Security and Protection Directorate are now conducting routine aerial patrols to supplement existing ground operations. KFS explained that the technology will allow better monitoring of trails and picnic areas, assuring the public of their safety.

“This new security system provides better monitoring of the forest area, giving visitors confidence as they walk, cycle, and picnic. The drone patrols work alongside existing ground security measures, showing KFS’s commitment to keeping Karura Forest safe and accessible for all Nairobi residents and visitors,” the statement read in part.

The move comes amid renewed debate over forest management following KFS’s takeover from the Community Forest Association (CFA). The python sighting, which surfaced online earlier this month, prompted security advisories from the agency.

While acknowledging the reports, KFS clarified that the widely circulated image of the reptile had not been authenticated, though it noted similar incidents had been documented in 2019 and 2022.

“In case of any sighting, the matter should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers located at the various gates,” the agency advised, adding that visitors with pets should keep them on leashes and remain on designated tracks.

KFS further assured Kenyans it is working with other government agencies to assess potential long-term solutions, even as it urged visitors to exercise caution while enjoying the forest’s trails.

Karura Forest remains one of Nairobi’s most treasured urban escapes, attracting thousands each month for jogging, cycling, and nature walks.
