KFS warns timber dealers and transporters over fake movement permits

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has sounded the alarm over the circulation of fake movement permits for forest products, warning businesses and transporters of timber, logs, poles, and charcoal that they risk arrest and confiscation of goods if caught with the documents.

In a statement issued Tuesday, September 30, KFS said unscrupulous individuals have been issuing forged permits and even shared samples of the fake letters already in circulation.

“Kenya Forest Service warns the public to beware of fake forest goods movement permits, which could lead to apprehension and impounding of the materials,” the agency said.

KFS clarified that genuine permits are only issued at County Forest Conservator offices, where applicants must present a Certificate of Origin indicating the source of materials. The documents are then verified by KFS officials before approval.

The agency urged the public to report suspicious permits to the nearest KFS office for investigation.

This comes amid recent adjustments in permit fees introduced in July 2024. While the movement permit fee remains at Ksh2,000, it now attracts a VAT charge of Ksh320. Imported timber permits rose sharply to Ksh25,570, while consignment fees for timber were set at Ksh20,000 plus VAT.

Transporters of charcoal also face new costs, including Ksh30 per bag plus VAT and a Ksh50 eCitizen transaction fee. Non-wood forest items will attract Ksh2 per item, VAT, and transaction fees.

KFS emphasized that all payments must be made exclusively through the eCitizen platform.
