Kiambu Assembly vets Zacharia Gitau for top revenue role

The County Assembly Committee on Finance and Economic Planning vetted Zacharia Karanja Gitau for the role of County Chief Receiver of Revenue. This position is a top leadership role in the Kiambu County Revenue Authority.

The vetting session took place yesterday. Committee members focused on Gitau’s experience, qualifications, and readiness to lead the county’s revenue systems. Gitau has over 16 years of experience in financial management. The county is considering him to improve fiscal discipline, increase revenue, and strengthen financial accountability.

Gitau currently serves as the Chief Officer for Revenue in Kiambu. Committee members praised his role in boosting recent revenue collection. They highlighted his success in financial reforms and management. Nyanduma Ward MCA Beth Chege chaired the session.

The committee reviewed his academic background, work history, and policy proposals. Members asked how he plans to fix revenue leakages, close enforcement gaps, and digitize revenue systems.

Gitau presented strategies to streamline revenue collection and improve transparency. He also promised to build taxpayer confidence. His plan includes expanding the revenue base, automating compliance, and improving coordination with sub-county teams.

The County Chief Receiver of Revenue manages all revenue collection, reporting, and accountability. The role also involves shaping policy and helping the county meet fiscal targets under national laws.

The committee will now write a report with its findings and recommendations. The full County Assembly will debate the report and vote on Gitau’s confirmation. If approved, Gitau will officially take the role and lead the Revenue Authority’s reform efforts.

This appointment comes as counties face pressure to raise their own revenue and rely less on national funding. Stakeholders in Kiambu and across Kenya are watching the outcome closely.

The Kiambu County Revenue Authority is already undergoing reforms. These aim to boost revenue, seal loopholes, and improve public resource management. Gitau’s nomination marks a major step in that process.

The County Assembly will discuss the vetting report in the coming days before making a final decision.
