Coffee and milk farmers across Kiambu County have raised concern over fluctuating prices that continue to erode their earnings despite the high cost of production.
Farmers from Turitu and Kanunga told Kiambu TV that rising input costs have left many struggling to sustain their farms while waiting for payments.
John Njau, a coffee farmer in Turitu, lamented that even with government payments raised to over Ksh100 per kilo, expenses on labour and farm inputs often outweigh the returns.
“How can a cup of Kenyan coffee be sold for Ksh700 in big hotels, yet the farmer only earns Ksh100 per kilo? This is not fair,” Njau posed.
Milk producers delivering to Kiambaa Dairy Factory also voiced dissatisfaction after the price per litre dropped from Ksh48 to Ksh44. They noted that veterinary expenses and feeding costs have pushed many into losses.
Farmers are now urging stakeholders to address pricing disparities and ensure their hard work translates into fair income.
