Health services are set to resume in Kiambu County after doctors called off their 150-day strike following a breakthrough agreement between the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) and the Kiambu County Government.
The return-to-work formula, signed on Friday, October 24, 2025, was reached after mediation efforts by the Council of Governors (CoG), which brokered talks between the two parties.
KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah confirmed that doctors will return to their workstations on Monday, October 27, at 8 a.m. He said the deal addresses critical concerns that led to the prolonged industrial action.
Among the issues resolved were delayed salaries, doctors’ transfers, lack of promotions, unpaid statutory deductions, and medical insurance coverage. Dr. Atellah noted that the county had given binding assurances to address all these matters comprehensively.
“We have agreed on a framework that guarantees doctors fair treatment, timely pay, and improved working conditions. This is a win not only for our members but for the people of Kiambu who rely on public healthcare,” said Atellah.
The protracted strike had paralyzed health services across public hospitals, forcing patients to seek treatment in expensive private facilities. The situation drew national attention after reports emerged that over 130 infants had died in county health centers due to lack of services.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi welcomed the resolution, terming it a turning point for the county’s healthcare sector. He assured residents that the county is committed to implementing the agreed reforms and rebuilding trust between health workers and the government.
“The people of Kiambu deserve uninterrupted access to healthcare. This agreement marks the start of restoring stability and confidence in our health system,” Wamatangi said.
The Council of Governors commended both parties for embracing dialogue and prioritizing citizens’ welfare. It also urged other counties facing similar standoffs to follow Kiambu’s example and pursue peaceful resolutions to safeguard essential services.
With the deal in place, normal operations are expected to resume in all county hospitals starting next week, bringing relief to thousands of patients who had endured months without critical medical care.
