Over 1,500 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Kiambu County have voiced their discontent with the county government, citing unfair labor practices. In a petition presented by Hon. Lawrence Mwaura, the education committee chairman in the County Assembly, the teachers outline numerous grievances, including favoritism in promotions, unwarranted transfers, and intimidation.
The petition criticizes the county’s education department for promoting ECDE teachers based on favoritism rather than merit. The teachers argue that years of experience and academic qualifications are being overlooked in favor of a nepotistic system.
Additionally, the teachers allege that demotions are being carried out without due process or justification, significantly lowering morale within the ECDE teaching force.
The petition emphasizes the county government’s responsibility to manage pre-primary education and childcare facilities, as mandated by the Kenyan Constitution’s 2010 Fourth Schedule. Despite this legal obligation, the teachers feel that the department is failing to uphold professional standards.
Unfair transfers are another major issue highlighted in the petition. The teachers argue that these transfers, made without considering geographical location or the teacher’s experience, are causing undue stress and anxiety. They claim that the decision-making process lacks transparency.
The petition also describes a work environment where program officers and other education department officials resort to harassment and intimidation when ECDE teachers raise concerns. Issues of confidentiality are disregarded, creating a climate of fear. Many teachers, the petition reveals, have served diligently without proper titles or designations, further eroding their morale.
The petition concludes by detailing previous unsuccessful attempts to address these issues directly with the county government. The teachers are now seeking the County Assembly’s intervention to investigate the allegations and make recommendations to rectify the situation.
