In a significant boost for education accessibility, Kiambu County has launched a Sh500 million annual bursary fund for the 2024 academic year. This marks a major increase from the previous allocation of Sh100 million annually.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced during the launch that Sh200 million has already been issued to over 38,000 students as the first disbursement.
With this increase in funding, beneficiaries in day schools are guaranteed a minimum payment of Sh5,000, while those in boarding institutions will receive no less than Sh10,000.
This expansion aims to achieve two key goals: increasing the number of students who can benefit from the bursary program and enhancing the amount allocated to each student.
Previously, the county allocated Sh100 million annually for bursaries over the past decade.
However, the current administration has significantly increased the fund. In the last year alone, after tripling the allocation to Sh300 million, they disbursed Sh100 million three times – in March, July, and November – benefiting a total of 77,000 students.
The increased bursary allocation will provide much-needed financial support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them pursue their education.
