Kiambu County Mau Mau Veterans Petition for Renaming of Kirigiti International Stadium

The Kiambu County Mau Mau Liberation War Veterans Association has petitioned the Kiambu County Assembly to rename the Kirigiti International Stadium. Led by veteran Gitu wa Kahengeri, the Association presented their request to Hon. Speaker Charles Thiongo during a recent visit.

The veterans believe the stadium’s location holds historical significance in Kenya’s fight for independence. Originally known as Kiharo Gia Thathi-ini, the site stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Mau Mau fighters who bravely fought for Kenya’s freedom.

Construction of the Kirigiti International Stadium, funded by the Kenyan national government at an estimated cost of 600 million shillings, began in 2017. This modern facility, built using pre-cast concrete technology, boasts a seating capacity of approximately 15,000. While its completion was initially targeted for just before the 2022 elections, the project remains unfinished.

The veterans believe the stadium’s historical significance should be acknowledged. Kiharo Gia Thathi-ini has a rich history. Hundreds of Mau Mau fighters were detained there during the struggle. The Association emphasizes the need to recognize and honor this historical importance. They argue that the grounds bear witness to the sacrifices and unimaginable hardships endured by countless Mau Mau fighters while detained.

In light of this history, the Association proposes renaming the stadium either “Mau Mau Kirigiti International Stadium” or “Kirigiti Mau Mau International Stadium.” This, they argue, would serve as a fitting tribute to the brave souls who dedicated their lives to securing Kenya’s independence.

The Assembly now faces a significant decision. Renaming the stadium could not only preserve the memory of Kenya’s liberation struggle but also inspire future generations with the spirit of resilience and determination exhibited by the Mau Mau fighters.
