Kiambu County MCAs pass 2025 Finance Bill, slash fees and extend license validity to boost traders’ relief

Traders across Kiambu County are set for major relief following the passage of the Kiambu County Finance Bill, 2025, by the County Assembly on Wednesday, November 12.

The Bill, which underwent two days of rigorous debate and scrutiny, introduces far-reaching amendments aimed at easing the burden on local businesses while balancing the county’s revenue needs.

Among the key changes is the adjustment of the trading license validity period. Unlike before when licenses followed the calendar year, traders will now enjoy a twelve-month validity from the date of issue a shift hailed as fair and business-friendly.

The Bill also waives photography and videography fees for youth operating in public spaces, a move designed to boost creativity and empower young people in Kiambu’s growing creative sector.

Leader of Majority Hon. Godfrey Mucheke further proposed a 50 percent reduction in public health fees for non-food businesses a motion that passed unanimously after spirited debate. The amendment responds to persistent public calls to make compliance more affordable for small traders.

Members from various wards, including Hon. Waweru Wanyutu and Hon. Lawrence Wainaina, lauded the Assembly’s efforts to promote inclusivity and economic resilience through practical reforms.

Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Hon. Nduta Muongi, noted that traders in Limuru Central and beyond will benefit directly from the reduced fees and flexible licensing terms.

Speaker Hon. Charles M. Thiong’o commended members for their diligence, saying Kiambu had once again demonstrated leadership by becoming one of the first counties to pass its Finance Bill for 2025. He described the move as a win for both the people and the county government.

The passage of the Bill marks a significant step in Kiambu’s fiscal planning and sets the stage for a more business-friendly environment in the year ahead.
