Kiambu County rolls out free cancer screening drive to promote early detection and healthy living in communities

Kiambu County has stepped up its fight against cancer with a free medical check-up and cancer screening drive held at Kamangu, Nachu Ward in Kikuyu Sub-county as part of October Cancer Awareness Month activities.

The event, spearheaded by the Department of Health Services, offered cancer screening, HIV testing, family planning, nutrition counseling, and TB screening bringing crucial services closer to residents who often face barriers accessing healthcare.

Led by Dr. Agnes Karita, the Sub-county Health Management Team, supported by the Community Health Unit and the County Cancer Screening Team, urged residents to take advantage of early detection services.

“Cancer remains a major health concern, but early detection saves lives. We want our people to take advantage of these free services,” said Dr. Karita.

Hundreds of residents turned up for screenings targeting cervical, breast, and prostate cancers, alongside counseling on preventive healthcare and lifestyle management. Health experts emphasized the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol to lower cancer risks.

The camp also provided a health education platform, where nutritionists and clinicians guided participants on identifying early warning signs of cancer and the importance of seeking timely medical care.

Local residents lauded the initiative, saying it had made healthcare more accessible.

“I’m thankful for this camp because I managed to get screened for breast cancer without paying a cent,” said Jane Muthoni, a beneficiary.

According to the Department of Health Services, the county plans to expand similar medical outreaches across all sub-counties, ensuring equitable access to preventive and diagnostic care.

Through such community-driven initiatives, Kiambu County continues to advance its goal of creating a healthier, cancer-aware population one that prioritizes early screening, prevention, and timely treatment.
