Kiambu County Set for Relief as AWWDA Announces Sh73 Billion Dams Construction Project

Residents of Kiambu County can look forward to a more reliable water supply in the near future, thanks to a multi-billion shilling dam construction project launched by the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA).

The ambitious project aims to address the county’s perennial water shortages by building five new dams: Ndarugu II, Kamiti, Thiririka, Ruiru II, and Gatamaiyu. These dams, collectively estimated to cost Sh73 billion, will provide a steady flow of water to residents across the county.

To ensure the project’s successful completion, AWWDA plans to utilize a mix of financing options. This includes public funds alongside private partnerships. This approach aims to alleviate pressure on public resources while guaranteeing project completion.

However, the project faces a significant hurdle in the construction of the Ndarugu II dam, estimated to cost Sh15 billion. Touted as the county’s second-largest dam after the Sh24 billion Kariminu II dam, Ndarugu II is intended to provide water to residents in Gatundu, Juja, and Thika who were excluded from the Kariminu II supply plan.

Despite its potential benefits, Ndarugu II has faced resistance from local communities. In March 2023, AWWDA officials and consultants were chased away by residents during a meeting to explain the project’s scope and potential impact on their land.

Following this incident, over 480 landowners from affected villages filed a petition with the Thika Environment and Lands Court seeking to halt the project. The petition expresses concern about potential environmental degradation in Gatundu North and its impact on farming activities. Ng’ang’a Muthua, a former Chania MCA, echoed these concerns, urging the government to consider alternative locations.

The AWWDA must address the concerns raised by the Ndarugu II communities. Open communication, thorough environmental impact assessments, and fair compensation for affected landowners are crucial. These steps will ensure project success, minimize social disruption, and ultimately deliver the long-term benefits of a reliable water supply to Kiambu County.
