Thika Slums Get Sh150 Million Makeover

Kiandutu and Matharau slums in Thika are undergoing a significant transformation as Kiambu County invests Sh150 million in upgrading infrastructure and living conditions. This initiative comes as the county races against time to elevate Thika to city status.

The project, currently in its advanced stages, involves constructing bitumen roads, walkways, a social hall, drainage systems, and high-mast floodlights. Additionally, the county government is exploring modern waste management solutions and building modern toilets to improve hygiene and promote better living standards.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi, leading the initiative, emphasized empowering residents by issuing title deeds to over 5,000 individuals residing in the slums. “We want to empower you to build better houses,” he stated, promising delivery of title deeds by April 2024. “This will eliminate the fear of eviction,” he added, addressing a long-standing concern among residents.

Furthermore, Wamatangi announced the construction of a Sh75 million modern market in Kiandutu, a joint venture between the county and national government. The national government has already contributed Sh50 million for the single-story building, with the county government topping up the remaining amount.

These developments align with the county’s goal of elevating Thika to city status. Beyond the current project, the Governor has revealed plans to upgrade and expand Kiandutu Level 3 Hospital and finalize the procurement process for a new Athena Level 3 Hospital, equipped with inpatient and outpatient wings, a laboratory, and a mini-theater.

Local residents, while welcoming the initiative, have historically faced challenges with poor access roads, inadequate sanitation facilities, uncollected garbage, limited access to clean water, and high unemployment, particularly among youth. They hope this project signifies a lasting improvement in their lives and a brighter future for the community.
