Kiambu County to Receive Ksh 10 Billion Boost for Housing and Markets

Kiambu County is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with over Ksh 10 billion allocated for market and housing projects.

This news follows a recent meeting between Kiambu Members of Parliament (MPs) and Permanent Secretary (PS) Charles Hinga of the State Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, aimed to assess the progress and status of projects planned for the county.

The Ksh 10 billion allocation promises significant upgrades across Kiambu. While specific details on project distribution haven’t been released, each MP submitted priority projects, suggesting a potential spread of funds to various constituencies.

Notably, some projects are already underway, while others are in the tendering process.

The announcement also hinted at additional grants worth millions from the World Bank, potentially accessed through operational municipalities. This additional funding presents a significant opportunity, but also a time-sensitive challenge.

Governor Wamatangi established municipalities in Githunguri, Kabete, Lari, Juja, Gatundu, and Githurai upon taking office, fulfilling a key requirement for the World Bank grants.

However, the county now faces a crucial task: operationalizing these municipalities and their accounts within one month to access these crucial funds. Recruiting the necessary staff, including 12 municipal managers and board members, is also part of this requirement.

Senator Thang’wa, who participated in the delegation meeting, provided further insights into the development agenda, affirming, “Githunguri will not be left behind.” He highlighted the securing of a comprehensive package comprising 2,500 housing units, alongside the renovation of four primary schools and flood masts in Githunguri constituency.
