Kiambu expands quarry gravel for road repairs

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has inspected quarry sites in Githunguri, Thika and Juja as the county government intensifies preparations for a countywide rural road rehabilitation programme.

The governor toured the Miguta quarry in Ngewa Ward, Githunguri Sub-County, as well as quarry sites in Karibaribi, Thika, and Kuraiha, Juja, where the Department of Roads is stockpiling gravel for ongoing road improvement works.

According to the county government, the gravel reserves are intended to support the rehabilitation of rural access roads across multiple wards and sub-counties, with the aim of improving connectivity for residents, farmers and businesses.

The inspection comes as Kiambu rolls out a broader infrastructure programme targeting roads that have deteriorated due to heavy usage, seasonal rains and inadequate maintenance.

During the visit, Wamatangi said the county has deployed road construction units to various sub-counties to accelerate the rehabilitation works. The equipment includes excavators, graders, tippers and rollers, which are expected to support road repairs and maintenance across the county.

County officials indicated that the programme seeks to improve access to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services by making rural roads more passable throughout the year.

The road rehabilitation initiative is expected to benefit communities in agricultural areas where poor road conditions have often increased transport costs and delayed movement of goods and services.

Residents in several wards have previously raised concerns over damaged access roads, particularly during rainy seasons when sections become difficult to navigate. The county administration says the ongoing works are intended to address some of those challenges through grading, gravelling and other maintenance interventions.

The governor’s inspection focused on the availability of construction materials and the operational readiness of road crews assigned to different sub-counties.

County officials noted that stockpiling gravel in advance is meant to ensure a steady supply of materials as road works continue across the wards, reducing delays that can arise from sourcing materials during active construction.

The rehabilitation programme forms part of the county government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving mobility and supporting local economic activity.

While specific timelines for completion of all targeted roads were not provided, the county says construction teams are already working in various areas and additional road works will continue in phases across the sub-counties.

The inspections in Githunguri, Thika and Juja are expected to guide ongoing planning and resource allocation as the county expands its rural road improvement efforts.
