Kiambu Frontline Health Officers Trained as Health Entrepreneurs to Transform Grassroots Care

The Kiambu County Department of Health, in collaboration with Amref Health Africa and the Ministry of Health, has successfully concluded a four-day Health Entrepreneurship Training aimed at empowering frontline health officers with practical business and leadership skills.

Over 2,000 participants benefited from intensive sessions covering financial management, marketing and communication, governance, risk mitigation, and business resilience—key areas to help them go beyond caregiving and drive innovation in local healthcare delivery.

Director of Public Health and Sanitation in Kiambu County, Teresia Njoroge, emphasized that the county is nurturing a new generation of health leaders capable of responding to community needs as visionary change agents.

Peris Waithaka from Amref Health Africa noted that although the initiative began in Kiambu, it will soon expand to other counties, ultimately targeting the training of more than 2,500 health workers. “This partnership demonstrates that when we build local capacity, the outcomes become sustainable. What Kiambu is doing is a model for the rest of the country,” she added.

The program, known as the Learn for Life (L4L) initiative, will next train over 2,000 Community Health Promoters (CHPs). These CHPs will receive training in a Basic Business Module to ensure that knowledge gained reaches every ward, estate, and village in the county.

Purity Mwangi from the Ministry of Health highlighted that this approach marks a significant shift: “It’s not just about delivering health services, but about enabling communities to take ownership, innovate, and build resilience within their local health systems.”
