Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi faced a tense moment with Gatundu North MP Njoroge Kururia during a church service attended by President William Ruto in Gatundu North on Sunday, December 14.
Kururia appeared to recognise Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a as the incoming governor of Kiambu while introducing Wamatangi to speak, prompting the governor to assert his authority. Wamatangi emphasised that he remains the current governor and is prepared to defend his position in the 2027 elections.
Speaking to supporters, Wamatangi reminded leaders to prioritize development and shelve politicking until the election period. “Let us keep off politics. Politics will come up in 2027. We are prepared and will align ourselves accordingly,” he said.
He challenged Kururia for downplaying his political influence, asking supporters to affirm who the current governor is amid cheers.
President Ruto, present at the service, called for unity among Kiambu leaders, urging them to prioritize service delivery over premature politicking. He reminded them that elections will come, stressing that citizens’ expectations should guide leadership actions now.
The incident underscores rising political tensions in Kiambu County ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race, highlighting the interplay between local politics and national leadership influence.
