Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi Signs MOU with KIRDI to Boost SMEs

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The agreement will provide technical support, funding opportunities, and innovation-driven solutions, helping SMEs thrive in Kiambu County.

During the signing ceremony at the Kiambu County headquarters, Governor Wamatangi emphasized the need to empower local entrepreneurs. He noted that the partnership will enable SME owners to access modern technology, research-based solutions, and financial assistance, allowing them to improve productivity and become more competitive.

KIRDI, a government agency specializing in industrial research and development, will lead efforts to train SME owners. The institute will equip them with essential skills, helping them adopt innovative manufacturing processes and improve product quality.

Governor Wamatangi highlighted the critical role of SMEs in economic growth and job creation. He pointed out that small businesses face challenges, including limited access to funding, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of technical expertise. He assured entrepreneurs that the county government and KIRDI will bridge these gaps to create a conducive business environment.

The MOU also outlines plans to establish business incubation centers, where startups can receive mentorship, connect with industry experts, and access research facilities. These centers will serve as innovation hubs, helping entrepreneurs develop market-ready products and scale their businesses effectively.

KIRDI’s Director-General expressed strong optimism about the collaboration. He assured SME owners that KIRDI will provide tailored solutions to meet their specific challenges, supporting them in achieving sustainable business growth.

The partnership aligns with Kiambu County’s broader economic strategy, which focuses on modernizing business hubs, improving commercial centers, and increasing access to financial resources for micro-enterprises. Governor Wamatangi reiterated his commitment to strengthening the private sector, emphasizing that SMEs are the backbone of Kiambu’s economy.

As the initiative unfolds, local entrepreneurs will benefit from increased support, enabling them to expand their businesses and contribute to economic transformation. The collaboration between Kiambu County and KIRDI marks a significant step toward fostering innovation, boosting industrial growth, and securing long-term success for SMEs.
