Kiambu High Court rejects Ferdinand Waititu’s bid to reduce Ksh53 million bond in graft case

The Ferdinand Waititu’s attempt to reduce his Ksh53 million bail has been rejected by the High Court, dealing a fresh blow to the former Kiambu Governor.

Justice Wilfrida Okany ruled that Waititu’s application was premature, upholding the stringent bail conditions set last year following his Ksh588 million graft conviction. The conviction arose from irregular awarding of road construction tenders and the unlawful receipt of Ksh25 million from Testimony Enterprises during his tenure as Kiambu Governor.

Waititu had sought bail reduction while appealing the 12-year prison sentence imposed for corruption offences, but the court agreed with the prosecution that he had not met the legal threshold to interfere with the sentence.

The court further directed that Waititu’s appeal be heard and determined within 120 days, warning that any delays occasioned by the appellant could lead to the appeal being struck out.

As a result, Waititu will continue serving his sentence at Kamiti Maximum Prison, having failed to secure release under the current bond conditions.
