Kiambu County has taken a significant step towards improving access to healthcare services at the grassroots level after initiating the handover process of the Nyacaba Level 2 dispensary in Thika.
The facility, constructed through a partnership with Thika Power, is expected to bring essential medical services closer to residents who have for years been forced to travel long distances in search of treatment. County health officials say the move will help bridge healthcare gaps and strengthen service delivery within the community.
The handover process was led by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Dr Elias Maina, accompanied by Chief Officer Dr Patrick Nyaga and Chief Administrative Officer David Maina. The team also engaged members of the local community, who turned up in large numbers to witness the milestone and express their appreciation.
Residents welcomed the development, noting that the new dispensary will ease the burden of accessing healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups such as expectant mothers, children, and the elderly. For many families, accessing medical services has often meant long and costly journeys to facilities outside the area.
Once fully operational, the Nyacaba dispensary is expected to significantly reduce patient congestion at Gachororo Health Centre and Thika Level 5 Hospital, both of which have been serving a growing population. Health officials say the new facility will play a key role in decongesting these centres while ensuring patients receive timely care.
Speaking during the visit, Dr Maina said the project reflects the county government’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that no resident is left behind. He noted that partnerships such as the one with Thika Power are critical in accelerating development and improving service delivery.
County officials further emphasised that the facility will enhance dignity in healthcare by bringing services closer to the people, reducing travel time and associated costs for patients. It is also expected to strengthen the overall health system by improving access to primary healthcare services at the community level.
The Nyacaba dispensary now moves closer to full operationalisation, marking a major milestone in Kiambu’s efforts to expand healthcare access. As the county continues to invest in health infrastructure, residents can expect improved services aimed at delivering quality, affordable, and accessible care to all.
