Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka has urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to suspend its 14-day eviction notice issued to traders operating along road reserves in Kiambu Town.
Waithaka raised concern that the enforcement order comes at a time when the Kangangi Market the relocation site meant to host the affected traders is still incomplete. According to the MP, issuing an eviction directive without providing a practical alternative places already vulnerable families at risk of avoidable hardship.
He has now written formally to KeNHA requesting the authority to halt the notice and instead convene a joint meeting with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the State Department for Housing. Waithaka also wants representatives of the traders included in the meeting to agree on clear timelines and a coordinated plan.
The MP emphasised that while public spaces must be protected, enforcement should be humane and development-oriented.
“My commitment remains to stand with our traders and ensure fair, just and well-planned enforcement processes,” he said.
Waithaka said he will continue to push for solutions that safeguard both public interest and the livelihoods of residents.
