Kiambu officials inspect Kanunga borehole project

Residents of Kanunga and its surrounding areas in Kiambu County are set to benefit from improved access to clean and reliable water following ongoing borehole drilling works at Kanunga Shopping Centre.

County officials from the Department of Water, Environment, Energy and Natural Resources recently conducted an on-site inspection of the project to assess progress and ensure strict adherence to approved plans and technical standards. The inspection team was led by County Engineer John Kinuthia, alongside County Water Service Coordinator Isaac Ndirangu and County Geologist Richard Munge Muthua.

During the visit, the team evaluated key aspects of the project, including the quality of workmanship, compliance with safety and environmental requirements, and the efficiency of the drilling process. The officials also sought to confirm that the contractor is working within the agreed timelines to avoid delays that could hinder delivery of the much-needed water resource.

The borehole project is part of Kiambu County’s broader efforts to expand water infrastructure and address persistent water shortages affecting residents, particularly in rapidly growing urban and peri-urban areas. Access to clean water remains a major concern for many households, with residents often relying on alternative and sometimes unreliable sources.

County officials noted that close monitoring of such projects is critical in ensuring public funds are used effectively and that infrastructure delivered meets the expected standards. They emphasized that strict supervision helps prevent substandard work while guaranteeing long-term sustainability of water projects.

The inspection further highlighted the county government’s focus on ensuring environmental safeguards are upheld throughout the drilling process. Proper environmental management is key to protecting underground water sources and ensuring the project does not negatively impact surrounding ecosystems.

Once complete, the Kanunga borehole is expected to significantly ease water shortages in the area, improve sanitation, and support local economic activities. Small businesses, schools, and households stand to benefit from a steady and reliable water supply.

The initiative aligns with Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s development agenda, which prioritises expansion of water access across Kiambu County. The county government has continued to invest in similar projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.

As the project progresses, residents are optimistic that the borehole will offer a lasting solution to water challenges that have persisted for years, marking a significant step towards sustainable development in the area.
