Kiambu residents blame County for water crisis linked to shoddy roadworks

Residents near Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County are blaming county officials for a water outage caused by poorly executed roadworks that damaged key water pipelines. Many homes and apartments have gone more than a week without water. Locals say the county unfairly billed them for losses tied to infrastructure failures beyond their control.

Residents report that construction of access roads around the stadium began three weeks ago. During the work, heavy machinery allegedly broke underground pipes. Soon after, entire neighborhoods lost water supply. Residents say the county pinned liability on them, sending bills for lost water and halting reconnections until payments are made.

Community leaders accuse Governor Wamatangi’s administration of negligence and deflecting blame. Instead of helping residents, they say the county is punishing them for damage caused by its own project. Many have launched petitions demanding immediate water restoration and a full audit of the roadworks. They warn that the prolonged outage threatens hygiene, health, education, and small businesses.

County officials defend the project. They claim the disruption is temporary and due solely to unpaid bills. A county spokesperson said repair crews are fixing damaged pipes and will restore service once payments come through. But residents reject that explanation. They argue the county, not the public, should absorb the cost.

Urban planners and engineers say this reflects wider systemic failures. Poor coordination between road contractors and utility services often leads to costly service disruptions.

Health officials warn that extended water cuts can trigger disease outbreaks, worsen sanitation, and force families to rely on unsafe water sources. One warned that even a one-week delay could push families to spend more on bottled water, or take health risks.

Public pressure on the county continues to grow. Residents are demanding three things: immediate water restoration, a public report detailing the damage and repair costs, and answers on why newly laid roads are already crumbling.
