Authorities in Kiambu have issued a stern advisory urging residents to vacate areas within the 30-meter riparian corridor of watercourses. The directive comes amidst growing concerns over the safety and environmental impacts associated with human settlement in these sensitive zones.
Riparian corridors, essential for maintaining ecological balance and mitigating the effects of flooding, have faced increasing encroachment in recent years due to rapid urbanization and population growth. The proximity of human habitation to water bodies not only disrupts natural ecosystems but also exposes residents to various hazards, including the risk of flooding and waterborne diseases.
Speaking on behalf of the Kiambu County government, Environmental Minister Jane Wanjiru emphasized the necessity of adhering to riparian protection regulations. “The safety of our residents is paramount, and it is imperative that we take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property,” she stated during a press briefing.
The directive applies to residents living along rivers, streams, and other watercourses across the county. Authorities have warned of enforcement actions against those found in violation of the stipulated regulations, which include fines and possible relocation.
While acknowledging the challenges associated with relocating communities, officials underscored the importance of compliance in averting potential disasters. “We recognize the socio-economic implications of relocation, but the long-term benefits of preserving riparian zones far outweigh the short-term inconveniences,” remarked County Planning Officer, Samuel Gitau.
In addition to the evacuation directive, the county government has announced plans for comprehensive land-use planning and public awareness campaigns aimed at fostering sustainable development practices and promoting environmental stewardship.
As the deadline for compliance approaches, residents are urged to cooperate with authorities and explore alternative housing options provided by the government. The success of this initiative hinges on concerted efforts from all stakeholders to uphold environmental integrity and safeguard the well-being of Kiambu’s communities.
