Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has urged national administration officers and police to avoid being used as instruments to suppress political leaders.
Speaking at the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kiambu town, Thang’wa emphasized that politicians must be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of expression without facing harassment, including teargas dispersal.
“The police and politicians are all Kenyans and must coexist peacefully,” he said, cautioning against using law enforcement to settle political scores.
The senator supported Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s recent remarks, which urged security officers to stay neutral in politics and perform their duties within the law.
Murkomen highlighted that he instructed the Inspector General of Police to provide legal backing for officers using force only in self-defense or to protect lives. He added, however, that the use of firearms or excessive force cannot be justified against demonstrators exercising their rights.
