Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has warned Members of Parliament tasked with vetting the newly nominated cabinet secretaries by President William Ruto. Speaking at an event in Mwea, Kirinyaga, Senator Thang’wa emphasized the critical importance of MPs considering public sentiment before endorsing any nominees for the cabinet positions.
Senator Thang’wa’s remarks come in the wake of President Ruto’s nomination of 11 cabinet secretaries following the dissolution of the previous cabinet. He urged MPs to actively seek and heed the views of Kenyan citizens to avoid repeating past mistakes that have led to public discontent and protests.
“It is now the duty of the MPs, before they approve any individual, they should listen to the people,” Senator Thang’wa asserted, highlighting the necessity for lawmakers to align their decisions with the desires of the electorate.
Reflecting on recent nationwide protests sparked by dissatisfaction with government decisions, Senator Thang’wa cautioned against disregarding public opinion, stating, “Raia wakisema hivi, msitake tuseme reject, wakisema reject huyo, mnareject. “Wakenya ni 50 million (Kenyan citizens are 50 million).”
He further stressed the abundance of capable candidates available for consideration, urging thorough scrutiny of each nominee to ensure suitability and public acceptance.
In a call for unity and collective responsibility, Senator Thang’wa also urged residents of the Mt Kenya region to support and pray for their nominees, underscoring the need for cohesive governance amidst the current political landscape.
President Ruto’s cabinet nominations are expected to undergo parliamentary vetting once MPs reconvene following their ongoing recess.
