Kiambu County has unveiled plans to construct a modern market at Kimende Township in Kijabe Ward, Lari Sub-County, in a move aimed at transforming local trade and supporting small-scale farmers.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced the project, which will be implemented through the county’s Department of Trade, saying it is part of a broader strategy to improve market infrastructure and create economic opportunities at the grassroots.
The proposed Kimende Modern Market is designed to accommodate a wide range of traders, particularly those dealing in farm produce and everyday goods. Once complete, the facility is expected to offer a structured and organized trading environment, replacing the current informal setups that many traders rely on.
According to the county government, the market will feature modern stalls, designated trading spaces, and a cooling area to help preserve perishable goods. This is expected to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, a major challenge for farmers in the region.
In addition to trading spaces, the facility will include a hotel, an ICT hub, a nursing area for lactating mothers, and adequate ablution blocks. These features are aimed at making the market not just a commercial hub, but also a convenient and inclusive space for all users.
The ICT hub is expected to open up digital opportunities for traders, enabling them to access market information, financial services, and online platforms to expand their businesses. At the same time, the inclusion of a nursing area reflects efforts to create a family-friendly environment that supports working mothers.
Residents and traders in Kimende and surrounding areas are set to benefit from improved infrastructure, which is likely to attract more buyers and investors into the region. The market is also expected to create employment opportunities during both the construction phase and after completion.
Governor Wamatangi noted that the project aligns with the county’s commitment to empower local communities and strengthen the agricultural value chain. By providing a reliable and well-equipped marketplace, the county aims to enhance income for farmers and traders while boosting overall economic activity in Lari Sub-County.
The Kimende Modern Market is part of a wider push by the Kiambu County Government to modernize trading centres and ensure that residents have access to dignified and efficient business environments.
