A new youth empowerment initiative dubbed the Kiambu Youth Impact Circle (KYIC) has been launched to equip young people in Kiambu County with essential civic knowledge, mentorship, and entrepreneurship skills.
The program, officially unveiled last week, attracted hundreds of young people and was graced by former Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, community leaders, and youth advocates.
KYIC Chairperson Shem Ranji said the group was established to address gaps in civic awareness and youth representation in the county.
“We realized many youths don’t know what their leaders actually do or how government works. That’s why we started civic classes to educate and empower our peers,” said Ranji.
Ranji added that most young people in Kiambu remain unaware of the roles and responsibilities of their elected leaders — from Members of County Assembly to Members of Parliament leaving them disconnected from governance processes.
The group will operate across Kiambu, Ndumberi, Riabai, and Ting’ang’a wards and is currently registering as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) while maintaining a strictly non-political stance.
KYIC Patron Thomas Kimari Kamau, popularly known as Gratom, said the initiative’s goal is to create tangible opportunities that uplift young people.
“Our dream is to see young people in Kiambu empowered not just through talk, but through opportunities that transform lives,” he said.
Already, the initiative is changing lives. Brian Mbugua, a participant from Riabai Ward, said the civic and business mentorship has given him a new sense of purpose.
“Before joining, I didn’t understand much about leadership or business. Now I’m planning to expand my boda boda business and employ others,” he shared.
Grace Njeri from Ndumberi Ward praised the program for giving young women confidence and a voice.
“As young women, we often feel left out of important discussions. KYIC has given me the courage to speak up and mentor other girls,” she said.
KYIC’s Legal Secretary Florence Wairimu said registration as a CBO will boost transparency and open doors for collaboration with other development partners.
“Once registration is complete, we will begin formal recruitment and support youth with viable business ideas or those needing a boost for existing ventures,” she explained.
The organisation also plans to conduct regular civic training workshops, mentorship forums, and mental health awareness drives within the four wards.
Ranji urged young people to take advantage of the initiative, noting that KYIC’s mission aligns with Kenya’s National Youth Policy, which promotes inclusion, innovation, and job creation.
The launch concluded with a call for youth across Kiambu to join the movement and actively participate in building a more informed, accountable, and development-driven community.
