Kiganjo Police College not relocating, Senator Wamatinga clarifies

Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has dismissed claims that the National Police College in Kiganjo is set to be relocated, terming the reports misleading and unfounded.

Speaking during an interview, the Senator said leaders from Nyeri only engaged President William Ruto on plans to upgrade the institution into a higher learning centre offering diploma and degree programmes for police officers.

Wamatinga accused some regional leaders of spreading misinformation, urging residents to ignore what he described as propaganda surrounding the future of the century-old police training facility.

According to the Senator, discussions with the President focused on modernising the college and expanding its academic scope to strengthen professionalism, leadership and capacity within the National Police Service.

He clarified that the proposal involved relocating basic paramilitary training activities, including firearms and tactical drills, to remote areas better suited for such exercises, while retaining Kiganjo as an academic and professional training hub.

“At no point did we discuss closing or transferring the college from Nyeri,” Wamatinga said, insisting the institution would remain intact.

His remarks come days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also dismissed claims that the government plans to relocate the Kiganjo college to the North Rift. Murkomen said additional training facilities would only complement existing institutions, not replace them.

Wamatinga further urged Kenyans to focus on development-based leadership, citing ongoing infrastructure projects and economic indicators as signs of national progress.
