Kikuyu Council of Elders Postpones Boys’ Circumcision to Next Year to Align with CBC Transition

The Kikuyu Council of Elders, Kiama Kia Ma, has announced the postponement of this year’s circumcision ceremonies for boys until next year.

To align the traditional rite of passage with the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the elders have deemed it necessary to delay the circumcision.

The CBC system, a gradual replacement for the 8-4-4 system, introduces a new educational structure with a transition from Junior Secondary School (JSS) to Senior Secondary School.

Recognizing that this year’s initiates would still be in primary school next year, the elders believe postponing the circumcision will ensure a smoother integration of the cultural practice into the academic calendar.

Kiama Kia Ma emphasizes that this decision is in the best interests of the boys and the community. While preserving cultural heritage remains paramount, the council acknowledges the need to adapt to modern educational demands.

The elders assure the community that next year’s circumcision ceremonies will proceed as planned, providing the necessary cultural guidance and support to the initiates.
